About 1 month ago I started working with a physical therapist that specializes in CRPS/RSD. She recommended we try kinesiology tape for my piriformis syndrome. What a difference its makes in my piriformis pain when my butt is taped. I esp. notice the difference when I swim as I don't get that deep ache in my butt when the kinesiology tape is on. Two weeks ago we were trying to add in some stress loading exercises and while trying to do that it really flared my rectal pain and spasms. I went back to the pelvic floor PT to work on me and that helped a little. On Friday when I saw the CRPS PT I asked if we could try to do some taping for the rectal pain and spasms as it was getting really bad again. She taped from the ischial tuberosity and pulled the tape at an angle up to the top of the femur. I arrived at PT with rectal pain and spasms that were a 6 and by the time I got home it was a 1. I took the tape off after 3 days and within 24 hours the pain was back to up 5. Yesterday she taped for my rectal spasms and by the time I got home it was a 1 again. This Friday she will try taping both for the rectal pain and the piriformis. I can't even believe the different the kinesiology tape makes.
I went to the library and got a book out called "Acupressure Taping" by Hans-Ulrich Hecker and Kay Liebchen. It gives good directions on how to tape and shows how to tape all kinds of areas of the body. It has a great information on how to tape for the SIJ. I'm sure there are other books out there but this is the one the library had. Saves money and as all PN patients know we have direct deposit to medical professionals.
Anyway, this another tool in the box that I hope someone else will find helpful.

Re: Kinesiology Tape - Piriformis and Rectal Pain
This is a very interesting development, nyt! Glad to hear of its effect on you. Do you have any explanation as to why the tape reduces pain?
Athlete until pain started in 2001. Diagnosed with PN in Nov. 2010. Probable cause: 3 difficult labors, 5 pelvic surgeries for endometriosis, and undiagnosed hip injuries. 60% better after 3 rounds of shockwave therapy in Cornwall, Ontario (Dec - Feb/12). 99% better after bilateral hip scopes for FAI and labral tears (April and July/12). Pelvic pain life coach Lorraine Faendrich helped me overcome the mind/body connection to chronic pain: http://www.radiantlifedesign.com

Lernica, the link below gives a little blurb about the mechanisms behind how Kinesiology taping helps.
