best way to treat a migraine

Post by kimranisa »

What is the best way to treat a migraine? I get migraines every so often, and I was wondering what the best way to treat them was. I've used Excedrine Migraine, but it doesn't always work. If you have any suggestions I would greatly appriciate it.

I get migraines too. Some migraines are brought on by food triggers or stress. Mine are related to hormonal shifts with my menstrual cycle.

You can try taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory (Ibuprofen, naproxen) and drinking caffeine. That's basically what's in Excedrin headache medicine.

If that doesn't help, you can ask your doctor for a prescription. You'll have to find the right med that works for you. I tried multiple drugs before I found the one that works for me. It's called Zomig and it's a vasoconstrictor (Constricts the blood vessels). I couldn't survive without it.

If your migraines are affecting your way of life, it's worth going to the doctor to try to resolve them.

I've had migraines for about 15 years now. I treated with doctors for the first 6 years and then had enough and just learned to deal with them. (I have what's called chronic migraines, it affects about 3% of the population so it's a little different than what people mean when they say migraine. My headaches are nonstop 24/7 but they are very mild, I do get severe headaches on top of that as well as do "regular" migraine sufferers.)
I started with a new headache doctor recently, I tried Imitrix both oral and injection, I reacted badly to both. I then tried Zomig, and I reacted badly to that as well. Yesterday I actually had Botox, it was about 35 injections to my forehead, temples, scalp, head, neck and shoulders. I've heard very good things about it and I'm hoping it will help (it takes about 7-14 days to start feeling the affect) I'm also starting acupuncture for both my migraines and hip and pelvic pain. I've done it in the past for the migraines and it did help though it's been a few years.
It may also be worthwhile to check your Vitamin B, D and Magnesium levels as if they are low they can contribute to your migraine pain. (I take supplements for all those)
Good luck!

Honestly, the botox did not help. I don't know if it's because my stress quadrupled right after I had the botox done and my depression came back, which always makes my headaches work, or it just didn't work. I know someone who swears by it. I'm debating whether to give it another try or not, I have to speak to my doctor
