Which specialist?

Post by laura101 »

Is a neurologist the proper specialist to treat tight muscles and problems with the pudendal nerve? The gynecologists that I have visit know barely nothing about my problem...So I do not know where to go. Maybe if it is nerve problem a neurologist should know about it, shouldn't he? I suppose that the best option is a multidisciplinary team of doctors but that is very difficult to find. Anybody has a good experience with a neurologist? Do neurologist know about muscles? I suppose that not all neurologists know about everything but I hope that some of them are trained in genital and pelvic problems. What do you think?

I would not waste time with a neurologist. Try to find a urogynecologist or a vulvodynia specialist if your talking about genital pain.

Although the neuroligists should be our experts foe the pudendal nerve they are not all up to speed on this nerve or condition. Patty's suggestions mat get you further. Also if it is muscle related a PN-aware PT (check the list off the home page) could help loosen up and even sometimes help with diagnosis info (my PT suggested PNE due to tight ligaments around the PN and sent me to Dr. Marvel). Good luck

My neurologist didn't have a clue. One of the urogynecologists I went to was helpful, but some were not. A lot depends on whether a particular physician has an interest in treating PN.

There are different approaches to treating tight muscles so the type of specialist you go to might depend on what type of treatment you are interested in pursuing too. For instance for mysfascial release you would go to a pelvic floor PT who is trained in treating pudendal neuralgia. For trigger point injections or Botox you might try a urogynecologist or a pain management specialist who can use image guidance to target the obturator internus.

PNE since 2002. Started from weightlifting. PNE surgery from Dr. Bautrant, Oct 2004. Pain now is usually a 0 and I can sit for hours on certain chairs. No longer take medication for PNE. Can work full time and do "The Firm" exercise program. 99% cured from PGAD. PNE surgery was right for me but it might not be for you. Do your research.
