No Bending

Post by Emily B »

My physical therapist told me no bending. So hard to do! Putting on shoes, shaving legs, reaching under cabinets, picking up stuff off of the floor...

Has anyone bought one of those reacher/grabber aids? There are so many out there, I'm not sure which one to get. Any advise is appreciated.

Emily,
I have a grabber that can also "lock" onto the object. Big help and I use it to get stuff out of the clothes dryer(my acupuncturis said even with it I should not do laundry but hubby barely keeps up with his own clothes!). I end up moving items especially heavier things more to mid shelf, it is a big change but necessary. I had recalled my brother going through this with his stroke and my sister in law trying to rearrange things so he could still help around the house. You are not alone, we are all struggliing but any thing can help and you will be glad for results.

This is the best one out there by far. I have used one extensively for 3 years . Pick up yard waste and everything. The end rotates to get things off shelves. Called Grip and Grab...Bought a ton of these for relatives and friends. Can pickup bbs and even dimes off floors. Just don/t use as cane. I broke one with my 280 lb body.

My PT told me to do the "golfer" bend with one led out if I had to.

Also I have the harbor freight grabber and it is pretty strong it will handle a quart of past sauce easily.

Just thought I'd post this re the 'no bending' problem of putting on shoes....I'm finding this long handled shoehorn grabber good as you can pick up one shoe at a time in its 'jaws' and bring it close to your foot and then use the shoe horn/lift part to aid sliding your foot into slip on shoes: http://www.co-operativeindependentlivin ... horn-p1620 (They do them on amazon.co.uk, so, if they're not available in the US - or wherever else you might be in the world - hopefully, it wouldn't be too costly to import.)

To convert lace up shoes to slip ons in order to stop having to bend, there are these silicon no tie laces available on amazon.com and amazon.co.uk that might be worth a try (but see all of the reviews before you consider buying) http://www.amazon.co.uk/KOOLLACES-NO-TI ... B00LDUURJ0 (I've not tried them myself as the majority of my shoes are slip ons or have velcro fastenings, which I open and close with another long-handled grabber that I use, i.e. which doesn't have a shoe horn/lift on it).
