I had a femoral/inguinal hernia back in the 80's. They're very easy to feel. In fact if your doctor could not find it he needs to give up his license. I self-diagnosed before I ever went to see a doctor. I would have to lie flat on the bed and push it back in, but it would not stay in for long! It is a definite lump when it's out. I eventually had the operation and a year later came back. The doctor said I had weak tissue and next operation used mesh to support the tissue. It has never returned!
I wouldn't worry about strangulation too much; it doesn't happen too easily. I don't think you have one anyway or your doctor would have found it.
