hi Calluna,

Now I have a question: What do CBT, NLP and CES stand for?
2004 PNE following vag. hysterectomy and A & P repair. 2007 TIR surgery France. severe entrapment at Alcocks canal & SS ligaments . Have my life back. 90% cured. No longer have medical appts.or physio. Some pain remains but is tolerable. 2012 Flew from Australia to the UK without pain flare. Very manageable. Almost back to normal. Now hold support group meetings at KEMH Subiaco Perth WA. Every 2nd Sat. of the month. Still pace my activities. PN doesn't dominate any more.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Neuro Linguistic Programming, and Cranial ElectroStimulation.

CBT I learned one-to-one with a psychologist, via my local GP service, for help with pain management. I also attended a 6 week course, that was difficult I can tell you, not so much the course content but because I had not found the best cushion for sitting. There is so much that I use from CBT - the use of breathing, pacing, lifestyle changes, the list goes on. By the way, the NHS does have its advantages - all this was free and I only had to wait two weeks for my first appointment.

NLP - the main technique that I use involves visualisation, it is called the Swish Technique. This is a powerful technique, it is very useful when one of those blinding pain spikes comes along. We have a friend who is a consultant hypnotherapist in Harley Street, and he has helped me a lot. I should probably put deep relaxation in my list too, he made a cd for me, and it always makes me feel better - more energised and positive.

CES is a bit alternative, the unit that I use is only licensed in the US for use as an aid to relaxation and can only be described as such, it is sold by Amazon. In Canada it is licensed for use with chronic pain. I find it helps me.

I also use my little TENS machine which I got from the Pain Clinic, this helps too. I have acupuncture at the Pain Clinic as well, and I use acupuncture press needles between sessions, the nurse consultant has taught me how to use them and I do find that they help.

None of these things taken alone is enough, but they do all help a bit, and all the little helps add up to something worthwhile.
