hi everyone,
Has anyone used laxative suppsitories for pain med induced constipation. I find that they cause more pain in the anal area.. since for me thats where my nerve pain is.
One nurse suggested the glycerin suppsistory rather than putting oral laxatives in my system. but I haven't found these supps either effective or comfortable..
However the my laxative/stool soften regimen takes awhile to work but always results in a day of diarrhea, If I cut back the stool builds faster and annoys the nerve.
Hence she suggesteed the laxative supp..
Thx in advance!

I am a newbie here but have been on OxyContin, Roxies, and others. I drink Prune juice and it seems to do the trick. In emergency situations I have used a suppository laxative to just get it started, then one Fleets enema. For me that gets me going within 10 to 15 minutes with normal bowel sounds returning. Here is something else I learned after my hip surgery. I had not had a BM in 5 days during my stay in the hospital. I was sent home with Percocet. My brother hired a caregiver to stay with me and I told her my problem. She had been in several car wrecks and understood. She had learned a technique for abdominal massage starting at the top and going down. The massage was not painful and within 15 minutes I went to the bathroom. All 5 days of food came out. It was amazing and such a relief. I would research the proper technique on line but I have since done it to myself and it works.

Hi
A question for anyone with anal pain.
I ve been instructed to use regular Dulcolax suppositories to get on a normal bowel schedule... I use sennekot at Bedtime and suppository in AM.
Just started in the past week or two.

I have irregular BMs due to opiod meds for sevee anal pain whihc we assune is PN related
this method was suggested for a specific reason by my gastro doc... and worked well for about the first week.
My question: Since my main pain area is Anal/Rectal pain ....could inserting a Dulcolax supp daily produce more pain? I also use pain suppositorees usuallly daily, which are soothing..

I noticed my pain levels have gone ups these past few days quite a bit!....but I had been feeling a bit less pain the week before and began to increase activities, tried driving again for first time in ages,
plus lots of being on my feet... Christmas rush.
Also holiday rush to buy gifts for big family = stress = tighter, constricted muscles ,,,, resulting in pain for me. So not sure what's going on.

Any one herw try a suppository regimen and have opinions on it? ..would it irritate the PN further? ...MY gastro doc said NO, and my pain docs nurse said that its benefits outweight any possible negatives.
ie ....having "regular BMs" are a goal for those with PN pain.

Also finding that earlier in the week I had better BMS ...now sudddenly getting tiny output ....sorry for details
Tho if you use a suppository each day as I was told to, would there even be enough stool there to produce a large BM each day?.. I am a small framed thin gal with a tiny stomach!
Thanks and sorry to be graphic, but Doctor is unavailable until after holiday,, and Im worried! Docs don't always get how much anal pain hurts and how it prevents sitting etc.
Thanks for any advice based on your experience....bowel issues and pain meds are a tough combination!

Kathyd,
I went to a seminar several years ago given by a woman (MD) surgeon. Apparently, with women the bowel can enlarge and create a pocket that causes anal pain. I remember the images and the suturing technique that used silver beads that, as the sutures decayed the beads feel in the toilet. (I was a surgical tech student at the time). I would say your best bet is to find a female surgeon that specializes in bowel surgery. Let me ask around.

Hi DogWalker
Thanks so much for this info and for checking into it.. Does this "pocket" in that area relate to PN? I have never been sure whether I do have PN as the usual PN intereventions--
ie,...nerve blocks and physical therapy have not helped..
Is the pain you/re referring the throbbing aching type?

I originally had sit bone pain, but later it went to the anal area...
Thx again!
Kathy

In pain pump for neuralgia, the first option is bupivacaĆna or other anesthesic. No morphine. Talk this about with your Doc.

Thanks bms
We are using bupivicaine in my pump, but there is a protocol the doc must follow with pain pumps at least on the east coast
That is that
morphine is the lead drug in the pump and another drugs added are at the doc'schoice depending on patient needs
It is up to patient to ask the doc for the meds they think may help etc
Thx
