Hello! I'm 20 years of age, male and im quite certain i have PGAD. I was actually a third year university student and a part time student teacher for university of Waterloo. Beginning of this year my symptoms started to begin, i started my ta job and unfortunately one week after doing it i told my prof i cant do it because of the work load i have this year, but in reality i could barely focus teaching due to the symptoms getting in the way. 1 month after this i had my first exam, while in the examination room my PGAD was unbearable at this stage, i think pressure / stress increases this highly. So yea i dropped out of uni. At the moment I'm trying to get this treated in the hopes of returning next semester. Since this is a female dominated disorder most doctors just tell males who have it "Its in your head", I've been turned down by two doctors so far. I use to go to the gym everyday, i havent went since, my life has gotten really depressing at this point. I live in Canada and I'm in need of a doctor who knows of this so i can get this treated.

* I also have no fear if surgery is required i had over 5 surgical procedures

Five or more surgeries are a lot for only 20 years old. Not sure if they are related to your current situation, but I suggest you see a urologist.

Potentially there may be a relation though i had them at a young age, i've been surgery free for ten years now. And I've seen two doctor, one being a urologist and he was the one to say "its probably just in my head".

Hello Whatislife,
I sent you a PM with a few possible leads available in Canada. Please check your messages.

Whatislife,

Sorry you are going through this. It's truly a dreadful disorder but I hope you can find a health care provider who can help you. Sounds like Laurina may have given you some leads via PM but I just wanted to add that with your history of weight lifting it might not be a bad idea to be evaluated by a physical therapist for pelvic floor dysfunction or musculoskeletal anomalies. You can check out the practitioners in Canada by going to the home page at pudendalhope.org and going to the list of PT's and doctors in the left hand menu.

When I was initially going through the diagnosis stage I was told by a neurologist to go see a psychiatrist. I was told by the sex therapist who worked with the psychiatrist that the psychiatrist wondered if maybe I was a nymphomaniac. Talk about humiliation -- but I kept searching for answers because I knew it was not all in my head. You will eventually find some answers and some treatments that help. So be strong and hold your head up high because this is not all in your head. You will eventually find the right doctors.

In the meantime you might want to try some medications to dampen the symptoms. Lexapro helped me a lot but there are different drugs you can try. One of my friends takes buprenorphine and it takes the PGAD symptoms away. She's been on it for years and it's still effective. Just some ideas to try.

Hello Violet,

Thanks for your reply and I'll surely be trying out some of the medication you have said.My greatest fear of going to a specialist for this is actually being called a nymphomaniac (male version of it that is). My family doctor was very supportive though and gave a meaningful letter to the specialist office despite not knowing anything of the disorder, I'm hoping to get my medications by this month hopefully. Hope everything well for you too, and everyone else with this disorder.

Hi WhatisLife,

Depending on where you live, you might try contacting one of these physiotherapists who are familiar with the disorder. Good luck.

I've heard good things about Nelly from other patients who posted on the forum. Carolyn may lean more toward the "it's in your head" crowd from what I've been told but I could be wrong.

Good luck.
