Lara,
I definitely tried that route but that was completely unsuccessful. I also participated to the TMS message board for a short time and it is very misleading. It seems that whatever you post, you get some PMs blasting what you say. So there is a very heavy dose of self censorship and people often do not come back to admit failure (as it is seen as a personal failure).
Sarno thinks even allergies are TMS which is really dubious. He lost credibility when he claimed that ulcers are TMS which we know is a "real" medical condition.
I also would like to mention that I had a few sessions with Don Dubin, a TMS "expert". He told me during those sessions that he himself had cold sweats and headaches and that was all due to "TMS". In fact he had untreated terminal cancer and passed away a few months later.

All i know is that the mind is so powerful. The only thing i have noticed is that my pain increases a lot ,when i am stressed ,and that when i dont't feel pain i get very anxious
Maybe it is a combination of both, mind and body ,i don't know.I went to a meditation place, and when i was talking to the Dr(Naturopathic/Holistic ) and started asking me questions about childhood, feelings etc i couldn't resist and started crying like a little girl,he wasn't talking to the woman but to the girl ,when got up from his bed, cause he knew i couldn't sit,i didnt feel the pain in my rectum...weird i know. All i am doing is trying to get to the root of my problem, and maybe you are right ,but also maybe you aren't. Who knows ,what works for some may not work for others.
I ordered the book ,i will let you know, for now i will start journaling and focussing in my feelings and emotions and not the physical.
by the way aren't ulcers caused by too much stress"?
Take care.

It won't hurt to read the book. Try it. Also, look on youtube as there are tons of interviews, tips etc... that are in fact quite well made.
I agree that pain is not well understood. Emotions can modulate the pain you perceive but in my experience, it is only temporary and you always go back to your baseline.
My problem with Sarno is that it is black or white. Either you have TMS (psychosomatic) or you have a physical problem. In reality you can have a physical problem but stress and emotions can make it worse.
It was demonstrated by Australian scientists that peptic ulcers are due to the h.pilory bacteria. They got the Nobel prize for their discovery in 2005.
