I understand the part about having your faith tested. I never completely let go because I always felt like if I did -- then I would have nothing, right? Besides the evidence for Christianity and the resurrection is so overwhelming that I don't think I could ever stop believing. Sometimes you can find a purpose and meaning in your suffering. I recently watched a movie about Dietrich Bonhoeffer and I may get his biography out of the library. (by Eric Metaxas) It's a powerful story about a man who lost his life trying to help other people. Just thought I would suggest it since you are into a reading mode right now. Your gf sounds like a very nice person.
