Valium and Pain Relief

Post by wannagetbetter »

If valium suppositories help relieve burning vulva and burning during urination does that mean the neuralgia is most likely from muscle spasms or would it also relieve pain from an entrapment?

This is something that interests me. It may be that it relaxes muscles and stops them impinging on the nerve. It may be that it has an effect on pain that is not yet understood, or it may be that it has a psychological effect that is helpful,in the short term.
If is relaxes muscles, I wonder why other muscle relaxants such as tizanidine don't work .

I've done some reading on this. Basically benzos have a profound effect on your nervous system. They promote the production of GABA which is the primary inhibitory (calming) neurotransmitter.in our brains. This transmitter down regulates nervous system activity which has a huge impact on pain. The relief we experience with these medications is due to the increase in GABA and not necessarily from the muscle relaxing properties of these medications. The mechanism is similar to that of gabapentin and lyrica. That is why other muscle relaxants don't work. Check out the link if you're interested Alan.

Thanks FFSeth, that's interesting and similar to the text Ezer quoted in March this year. The pain specialist doctors I've seen say that Valium doesn't help pain and by that I understand they mean that it doesn't act on pain signals ( sorry for my simple terminology) . My own experience is that it helps my pain better than just about anything else I've tried - perhaps - as you say, because of its calming effect on brain chemistry .
I wonder whether there are less addictive substances which would have a similar effect.

Hi
I can attest that anything that relaxes me helps my anal pain symptoms a bit (including my valium 10mg/baclofen 5mg rectal pain supps) .
conversely if I get tense or angry, pain goes up, making it clear to me that I unconsciously clench my pelvic floor often, whether Im rushing, busy, excited or angry.
I'm currently trying to reach my doc to get him to up the dose of valium or baclofen I use in my supps, as I remember that this helped someone on our site.

If it was Bunny that was using rectal supps at a higher dose, and was getting some relief from it,( or whoever it was that posted about it)
not sure who is\t was as Ive written to various folks). could you pls write me about the amount that helped? If you prefer to PM me thats fine.
I would really appreciate it..

Tho opiates ( I have in my pain pump) seem to do very little to reduce my pain; opiates are strong meds-- yet I can't sit for even a minute yet -- without inducing pain. esp after the activity.
So Im convinced that muscle relaxants are better in my case.

The rectal supps - help more it seems, but my dose is too low, as the relief is short -lasting and not enough.
For some folks whatever makes you relax is key.

I want to discuss this with my docand see if he will Rx a higher level of valium or whatever for my supps.
Thanks to whomever uses these similar supps and can respond.
Kathy
