Hi, after 10 months of pelvic floor pain and sexual discomfort, I was diagnosed with PN two days ago. My doctor prescribed Valium to be taken rectally every night. It is shipping to my home now. I spoke to the pharmacy and they said you just use your finger to administer this medication. everything I’ve read online says you use a syringe, but those websites talked about it in the context of controlling seizures so I’m not sure if it’s different.... I feel like using my finger wouldn’t get deep enough to get to the nerve. is this a normal thing? Can anyone help this newbie? Trying to get my doctor on the phone but it’s a little tough, and I’m moving out of he country on Monday (this is terrible timing but that’s a whole nother issue).

Diastat comes in a gel form and is valium that is administered rectally via syringe for seizures. I have administered it to patients before. I'm not sure if that's what your physician prescribed though.

Do you know what form your valium is coming in? Will it be a suppository, tablet or gel? If it's gel, I don't see how you would administer it with your finger. If it's a suppository you could administer it with your finger easily but you might need to stay lying down a short time until it dissolves into the mucous membranes. Some patients on this forum have also administered valium tablets rectally using a finger. So it really depends on what form it is coming in. The instructions should come with the medication so that might help you.

thank you! I know it is suppositories. When I spoke to the pharmacy this morning, they said the doctor didn’t specify whether it’d Be used vaginally or rectally I’m the prescription so they didn’t include anything (a syringe or I guess instructions..) He did tell me I should use it rectally though. I just figured since the nerve/muscle is so deep, I would need a syringe to help or something... but if that’s how it’s done then I can do that. Thank you for your help!

The approximate location of the pudendal nerve can be pressed on with a finger via the vagina or the rectum at the ischial spine. So it's deep, but not too deep to reach with a finger.
