Very Large Husband Needs Extremely Thick Cushion

Hi guys!

I can't tell you how relieved I am to find this board. My husband and I have been married 5.5 years and for the 10+ years we've known each other, his pudendal nerve entrapment - meaning our management of it - has absolutely ruled our lives.

He recently lost his job of 16 years, not directly due to his pain, but his anxiety in finding a new job that allows him to wear his comfy track pants and bring a pillow to sit on wherever he goes is through the roof. It's preventing him from even wanting to start the search, he's so afraid of being nagged about his pillow and his choice of clothing. As I'm sure all spouses of people with this issue know, it's absolutely devastating for me to watch him go through this. He's extremely shy whereas I'm extremely outgoing and I just want to smack all the people who ask us, "Oh, are you coming in for a nap?" wherever we bring his pillow (I usually carry it for him into places as it doesn't embarrass me like it does him.)

Here's what we desperately need but I can't find anywhere:

He wants a cushion that looks more like a laptop bag. Something with handles and that doesn't show the donut shape or "U" shape of the pillow inside. He currently sits on one or two EXTREMELY thick memory foam pillows at all times - when driving, when working at the computer, when he used to be at work...etc. But every single one we've found is WAY TOO THIN!!! He's a giant 6'6" 260lb guy with enormous size 16 feet (2 meters tall, 118kg, 18.6 stone, size 50 shoes). I added shoe size because a LOT of his pudendal pain comes from whether or not his shoes are too tight.

If anybody's ever seen this round-cutout Thera-Seat pillow: http://theraseat.com/shop-products/#!/S ... ort=normal he would need about 3 or 4 of those stacked on top of each other for it to work. But he wants them all in one case.

Does anybody have any suggestions for a seller of EXTREMELY THICK memory foam seats for pudendal pain? I'm talking like...it's probably going to look comically large when not squished. Like it might even come halfway up the back of a regular chair. Alternatively, does anybody know of a...what's the word...maybe a seamstress who would be able to make a seat cushion cover if, for instance, we went out and cut our own foam to size and all he/she would have to do is stitch a decent, executive-looking cover for it?

I realize how extremely specific this request is and thank you for your time of reading my plea. I'm desperate. I'd give anything to have his pain instead - I mean it, I'm not saying this flippantly. I've had kidney stones, so I KNOW the type of pain I'm asking for. I think I have the type of personality that could better handle it. But I'm desperate to do anything to help my poor husband right now and I figure this is the perfect place for such a specific request. Thanks!

The only cushion I can think of that I had that looked sort of like a laptop bag was the roho cushion. It had air pockets that had to be pumped up with an air pump. It was probably the most comfortable cushion I used but it was pretty bulky. I think the medical supply store employee came out and measured in order to get the right size so it's possible they could be made a custom size to fit your husband but I'm not sure. They are not cheap, but my insurance paid for it. Mine came with a cover.

INSURANCE PAID FOR IT?!?!?! Oooooh...can you tell me how you managed to convince them to do that? Did you have a note/prescription from your neurologist or something? I'm gonna look up the roho cushion right now!!! :D :D :D

I think my doctor wrote a prescription for it. I had them send it to the medical supply store in my city that was in my insurance network. The cushion has a bunch of separate air pockets and you can pump it up to be quite firm or kind of soft. I had the contour select roho cushion.

Maybe your husband can try this cushion...

It's a tough job to be a caregiver. Sounds like you're doing all you can to help your husband. Give yourself a much deserved pat on the back.

Thank you so much for the support, Emily, and for the hugs :D I try, but MAN is it hard to watch someone you love go through this awful horrible pain!!! Ughhh!!!

We looked at this pillow a few days ago, actually, and I scoured their site for all the sizes, but he's huge - he's 260lbs and 6'6" so everything has to be EXTRA super-sized for him. This cushion only goes up to 200lbs :'( He already needs padding that's extremely thick normally, so I can't imagine this seat would be able to support his weight. I wish we could buy just two extra of the side foam "wings" without the bottom connector and figure out a way to put the whole contraption in one case, but neither of us can sew :(

At this point, we're pretty sure we're going to have to buy a huge, thick piece of high-density foam and have someone "carve" it out into just the right shape and then sew a cover for it. He's tried so many different sitting pads since 2002 and NOTHING works - even heated car seats, which he was sure would help since heat relieves the pain.

But...ANY seat cushions I come across that have a 100% satisfaction guarantee and that pay for shipping both ways, we'll keep trying. Maybe I'll just order two of these and see what happens when he sits on them both at the same time...

Can you go to a local foam shop and see if they can custom make you one?

Fantastic idea!

We were looking up "custom foam seats" today and one of the first non-ad websites had all these awesome custom foam cushions that you can pretty much fully customize. When we scrolled to the bottom looking for a phone number, it turns out they're right here in Boulder, CO!!! We were shocked! So I called the number and asked if they were just the corporate office or if they were a store we could come visit and they're a store! The guy was super friendly and said he has tons of samples for us to come and try out! I was so floored and excited I could have jumped for joy!

So we're gonna head over there probably tomorrow to test the different foams out and see how many layers he needs.

Here's the website for anyone interested: https://www.foamsource.com/

I'll let you guys know if they're able to make us the perfect cushion or not!!! :D
