any Lactulose users?

Hi Folks
Quick question about a topic Ive posted about quite a bit, ..sorry!
Since I have an Intrathecal pain pump, I was told back in 2013 when I first got it, that I could still get constipated even tho the meds go right to the spinal cord, and that I must still take a laxative.
So I continued to .
I later discovered that I was never truly 'constipated' but I get the urge to defecate after every meal, partly due to the pact that my pain issue is that my pelvic floor (anal sphincters ) are in spasm-- causing an urge feeling.. now I also from unconsciously expect it, I think.

We feel this is from years of worry and too much research.
I clench my muscles automatically from anxiety... causing a continuing spasm. (long story)

I wish I could figure out how to break the cycle. My doc and great Pt truly agree as well and are trying to find ways to relax my sympathetic nervous system.
This could help my sitting pain and urge to "poop" urge to lessen. I should add that the meds in my pump are also part of it.
Sorry to digress.

My question: Recently I started taking lactulose to help me go.
It's supposed to draw water into the stool, making the stool softer etc.
I've found that quite the opposite is true with me.. It's good to have some bulk, but my stool is harder than before,and hurts after I pass it through my painful anal area. I am gradually adding more colace but wondered it anyone takes Lactulose and experienced this side effect?
